In 2013, the “Medical Engineering - Hybrid Professional Development Program, Continuing the Dejima Legacy,” was adopted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Science as a new paradigm to establish a center to foster future medical researchers. Collaboration between the graduate school of Bioscience and the school of Engineering aims to nurture professionals who can bring about innovation in the field of medicine. Medical and Engineering graduate students with different perspectives work together to develop medical instruments. Formerly Dejima, Nagasaki was the sole port through which western science and technology was introduced to Japan. Based on this history and tradition there are great aspirations for Nagasaki University to continue this legacy in the field of medical innovation.
