My specialization is gas sensors; initially the main role was as a gas leakage warning device. However development of these sensors has progressed as various principles of operation and materials have been used to produce a wide range of high performance gas sensors with application to increasingly widening fields. One such field is the medical field. For example by sampling exhaled air it is possible to detect disease specific volatile organic compounds with high sensitivity and high selectivity, and therefore, it could be conveniently used as a diagnostic tool. Currently such concepts are being actively researched both within Japan and abroad. This kind of technological development, both to date, and from now on, will be essential to the realization of state of the art medical equipment for advanced medical treatment. I have great hopes for the nurturing of many medical engineering hybrid professionals who are well versed in both medical and engineering fields.
