Contents of the Program

1. Doctoral Degree Awarded

Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Science: noting that the Program for Nurturing Global Leaders in Tropical and Emerging Communicable Diseases has been completed.

2. Policy on Degree Conferment

  • 1. To receive their doctoral degree and be certified as having completed the Program for Nurturing Global Leaders in Tropical and Emerging Communicable Diseases, students must:
    • A) Enroll in the program at the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Nagasaki University for 4 years.
    • B) Obtain a total of 39 credits
      - at least 10 credits in basic subject areas
      - at least 10 credits in courses related to infectious disease management
      - at least 3 credits in overseas training
      - at least 8 credits in practical training for communication skills
      - at least 8 credits for the dissertation
    • C) Pass the dissertation defense and final examination (for more details, see 2 below)
  • 2. To be able to receive a dissertation review and take the final examination, students must have passed three examinations.
    • A) Qualifying Examination 1 conducted at the end of year 1 (examination subjects: basic subject areas)
    • B) Qualifying Examination 2 conducted at the end of year 2 (examination subjects: applied subject areas)
    • C)Examinations on communication skills conducted each year (4 times in total)
      Students cannot apply for a dissertation review until they pass these three examinations.

3. Course Structure

This PhD course is open to 15 students each year. The faculty from the Institute of Tropical Medicine and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, and faculty with experience at international organizations from the Center for International Collaborative Research and the University Hospital International Healthcare Center (27 professors, 4 associate professors, 10 assistant professors; 41 in total) will teach the following lectures, and are in charge of training, including overseas training, communication skills training, and dissertation guidance. In addition, we invite professionals from the World Health Organization (WHO), the National Institute of Infectious Diseases, government agencies and other universities, or private sector pharmaceutical companies to lecture in our program. Leading world experts in infectious diseases are also invited as adjunct professors for this course and their lectures are incorporated into each subject of the program.

1. Basic subject areas to be taken in the first year

The following 7 required subjects, 6 required elective subjects, and 4 elective subjects are offered in order to provide interdisciplinary knowledge of pathogens and sociology related to control of tropical and emerging infectious diseases. 2 of 4 elective subjects are offered every other year.

2. Applied subject areas to be taken from the 2nd year to 4th year

The following 6 required subjects are offered to provide knowledge of risk management and infectious disease control.

Required

International Health, Medical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Emergency Management in Communicable Disease Epidemics, Clinical Management of Tropical Infectious Diseases, Epidemiology & Statistics, Risk Management.

3. Practical training for communication skills

Communication skills are taught throughout the program. The overseas training period is equivalent to communication skills training.

4. Overseas training

    - Overseas training I during the 2nd year
    - Overseas training II during the 3rd and 4th years

5. Dissertation

Students conduct dissertation research throughout their 4 years of graduate school enrollment and compile the results of their research in the 3rd and 4th year.
